Free Agency Takes

No off-season intrigues me more than the NFL off-season, don't ask my why. It just does. I don't get hyped up the same for the MLB or NBA. If you are a Chiefs fan, then you have reason to have mixed emotions

CHIEFS SIGN ERIC BERRY TO A SIX YEAR DEAL WORTH $78 MILLION

It finally happened Chiefs fans. The heart of the defense is going to be a Chief for at least the prime of his career, maybe the whole thing. It was touch and go for awhile, but in the end the two sides reached an agreement, making Berry the highest paid Safety in the league.

We all know Berry's heart touching story, from chemotherapy in Atlanta after being diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2014 to the highest paid safety in the league. Berry is an all around solid safety who is good in both rush and pass defense, pairing Berry with Marcus Peters and an improving Terrence Mitchell boosts their secondary heading into 2017.

The one problem I have with the Berry deal is that I'm not convinced he has six years of great football left in him. His new contract is threw 2022, He will be 34 by then. It is rare for a defensive back to have a high level of production at that age except for maybe Rhonde Barber or Charles Woodson. But then again, if the Chiefs would not have offered Berry a long term deal, he probably would not have signed it.

                                                       CHIEFS CUT JAMAAL CHARLES

The Chiefs have parted ways with the franchises' all time leading rusher. This move isn't really all that surprising. Charles turned 30 in December and has had two serious knee injuries. In the past two season Charles has only played in eight games, carried the ball 83 times for just over 400 yards.

Despite his absence, Charles is the NFL's all time leader in average yards per carry with 5.2, but the Chiefs had to make this move for a couple of reasons with the most important being that they needed to free up cap space to sign Berry. Charles' contract of 2 years, $18 million was way too much for a running back who is past his prime and has been plagued with the injuries Charles has had. Even if he is a team legend, it doesn't make sense to pay a guy $9 million a year if he isn't going to see the field.

If Charles can stay healthy, I think he could still be a productive player, but I think its far fetched to think he will ever be the great player he once was.

I'm certain that Charles will attempt to play in 2017. My guess would be in either Indianapolis, Philadelphia or New England.

Prediction-Philadelphia, Charles played under Head Coach Doug Pederson. The Eagles have a platoon of running backs, so they won't have to rely on Charles to carry the workload

VIKINGS PART WAYS WITH ADRIAN PETERSON

The Chiefs were not the only team to part ways with their best running back in team history. The Vikings announced yesterday that they had parted with Adrian Peterson. Meaning that one of the all time greats will not being wearing the purple and white in 2017.

I think this at least somewhat makes sense. Peterson will be 32 in a couple of weeks  and he only played three games last year and missed the entire 2014 season due to a suspension. The interesting question here is what the Vikings will do at running back. Jerrick McKinnon is not the every down answer and the Vikings do not have a first round pick thanks to the Sam Bradford trade.

It will be interesting to see where Peterson lands, I personally expect the favorites to be Seattle, New England, Dallas and the New York Giants. Seattle and New York both need running backs. Putting him in Dallas with Ezekiel Elliott would be a solid 1-2 punch and take some of the workload off of Peterson. I like New England because you never know what Bill Belichick might do.

Prediction-New York Giants, they have been awful at this position for quite some time. I think Peterson still has quite a bit of tread on his tires, pairing him with Eli Manning and Odell Beckham. Jr. could work wonders for the Giants.

REDSKINS PUT EXCLUSIVE FRANCHISE TAG ON KIRK COUSINS

Kirk Cousins has once again bet on himself. He has made just under $44 million in two seasons. Cousins has thrown for just over 9000 yards, 54 Touchdowns and 23 INTS in those two season with a record of 18-14.

  1. Tag! I'm it!

If Cousins performs like he obviously thinks he can, then he will NOT be in a Redskins uniform in 2018. The Redskins should have locked him into a long term deal, but they botched it. Cousins is the franchise signal caller they thought they had when they drafted RG3. He does occasionally make mistakes, but he has all the tools to be really good for the foreseeable future.

Maybe Cousins comes out and lays an egg next year and the Redskins look good for not giving him that long term deal with a large amount guaranteed, but I think Cousins will prove why he was willing to bet on himself. I look for Cousins to have a really good year. Because it will for sure be a contract year. Next year will determine whether or not Cousins signs that big fat deal that he wants.

COLIN KAEPERNICK OPTS OUT OF CONTRACT, BECOMES FREE AGENT

Regardless of what you think about Colin Kaepernick, you can't argue that there was a time where he looked like a quarterback of the future, but he was in a dumpsterfire known as the San Francisco 49ers. Kaepernick has played sporadically in the last two years. 19 starts-3,856 yards, 22 Touchdowns and 9 Interceptions.

Call me crazy, but I think that Kaepernick still has the potential to be at least a solid quarterback, Since Jim Harbaugh left, he has been surrounded by a bad team and terrible coaching. In the right situation, Kaepernick could be at least a shadow of what he once was.

Potential suitors for Kaepernick should include-Chicago, Cleveland and San Francisco (yes you read that right), Buffalo, Houston and Denver

Prediction-Cleveland. I don't think the Browns will take a QB in the draft. If there's a coach that can salvage Kaepernick's career. Hue Jackson is that guy.
